Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University

Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, formerly Rajendra Agricultural University, is a public central agriculture university and is recognised as Institute of National Importance by government of India. It is located in Pusa, Bihar. Rajendra Agricultural University was established as India's first-ever Imperial Agriculture Research Institute. In 1934, after a major earthquake rocked Bihar and which severely damage the main buildings, the Imperial Institute was shifted to the new Pusa campus in New Delhi and that eventually became Indian Agricultural Research Institute. What remained was downgraded to an agricultural research station until 3 December 1970, when the government of Bihar established Rajendra Agricultural University. On 11 May 2016, Parliament of India passed the Central University Bill. RAU has been upgraded to Central University and named as Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University.

Constituent Centres of University

  1. College of Agricultural Engineering, Pusa :- The Agricultural Engineering discipline aims to support the agriculture section in developing its agricultural production in a wider prospective. The College of Agricultural Engineering (CAE) came into existence under this University on 7th Dec. 1983 to give the much needed impetus for agricultural development in the state through education, research and transfer of technologies related to agricultural engineering. The College of Agricultural Engineering is producing good number of trained agricultural engineers to support and maintain the pace of agricultural development in the state.

  2. Tirhut College of Agriculture, Muzaffarpur :- The long cherished desire of agricultural community of Mithilanchal (North Bihar) was fulfilled on 18th August, 1960 when the foundation stone of Tirhut College of Agriculture, Dholi in Muzaffarpur district was laid by the first Chief Minister of Bihar Late Dr. Srikrishna Singh. The aspirations from the College were deployment of excellent source of agricultural knowledge and transformation of this vast fertile land tract of North Bihar in to granary bowl for upliftment of peasantry. The college was started with a handful of teachers led by Prof. S K Mukharjee as first Principal and one hundred students in 1961. The first batch of student passed out from the college in the year 1963. The college awards B. Sc. (Ag.) degree to the eligible candidates. The college is situated at the cultural interface of Tirhut and Mithila. Its geographical location is 25.98° N and 85.60° E at an altitude of 52.18 m above msl. The campus is almost equidistant (30 Km) from Muzaffarpur and Samastipur and 100 Km from the state capital Patna.

  3. College of Fisheries, Muzaffarpur :- The College of Fisheries, Dholi is the only institution in the fisheries sector in the State imparting an undergraduate professional degree programme. The College was established on 05.11.1986 after getting due approval of the Board of Management in its meeting held on 26.08.1986. The first batch of students was admitted in the academic session of 1986-87 on 13.01.1987. The College is located at Dholi, 25 km away from Muzaffarpur, the district headquarter and 10 km away from the university headquarter on Muzaffarpur – Pusa road.

  4. College of Community Science, Pusa :- College of Home Science in Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University was established in 1982 to foster the growth, development and well being of individual, families and communities in the State of Bihar through better education, research and transferring improved technologies related to better family living to rural and farm women. The College has five departments namely Foods & Nutrition, Family Resource Management, Textile and Apparel Designing, Human Development and Family Studies and Home Science Extension & Communication Management. All the departments have well qualified faculty members with Ph.D. degree and multi-dimensional qualities. As per the ICAR’s Dean’s Committee recommendation the name of the degree programme and College was Changed. thus the college is now known as College of Community Science.

  5. College of Basic Sciences & Humanities, Pusa :- Faculty of Basic Sciences and Humanities, was establishment in Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa in November, 1981 with the objective to strengthen the teaching and research programme in the disciplines of basic sciences so that it can act as a strong supporting programme for other faculties. Since its inception, the faculty achieved some significant landmarks in different areas. Besides committed to academic excellence in Basic Science subjects and maintaining interdisciplinary approaches for Graduate and Post Graduate students, all the departments are actively involved in research programmes in the areas of plant genetic resource management, hybrid rice research, development of heat tolerant wheat varieties, spot blotch disease resistance Molecular characterization, Tissue Culture, Mushroom production technology, and blue green algae (BGA) etc. These projects are funded by external agencies viz RKVY, ICAR, DBT, CIMMYT, AINP, USAID etc. including that from Non-plan budget .

  6. School of Agri-Business And Rural Management, Pusa :- MBA (Agribusiness) degree programme was launched on 22nd July, 2006 in the University during academic session 2006-07 with the sole mandate of generating professionally competent and socially responsible and technically qualified human capital with core management competencies having mission of becoming entrepreneurs and developing the capacity of managing agribusiness enterprise. The Agri Business Management (MBA) is a 2 year fully residential programme spanning over four semesters. ICAR approved courses of MBA (Agribusiness) has been implemented in this University since 2010. During the first year the programme will undertake teaching on core courses in the subject area of Economics, Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Communication, Legal Management, Human Resource Management, Management Information System, Agribusiness Environment and Policy, and students are given a holistic view of general management covering all functional areas of management.

  7. Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay College of Horticulture and Forestry, Piprakothi :- Agriculture is mainstay of Bihar economy. Fortunately, the state of Bihar is endowed with very fertile plain land sub-tropical climate and worlds a vast potential for growing a large variety of horticultural crops. The present Status of Horticulture and Forestry Education in Bihar, the general universities do not have any agricultural faculty and thus is not offering any programme leading to B.Sc or M.Sc degrees in agriculture or horticulture. Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, Pusa and Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour offer degree programmes in agricultural sciences. Now, horticulture is taught as one of the subjects of agriculture at undergraduate level in four agricultural colleges of the state. There is only one Horticulture college at Noorsarai, Patna district. P.G. Programmes leading to M. Sc and Ph. D degree in Horticulture is running at BAU, Sabour only.
